Sally ordered 5 purple loosestrife plug plants - an absolute winner with butterflies. They love it. The most ideal growing conditions for these plants is peat wetland although they will tolerate other soils as well. They are a moisture loving plant and their roots will survive in water.

So, the problem was how to create the best growing conditions in two very dry areas. Sally planted two plug plants in a container with no drainage so that they would be standing in water. This was an excellent idea because another problem with purple loosestrife is that it is invasive and will run away in any area planted. Having the plants in a container means that they cannot bolt and can easily be lifted out of the ground when needing potting on or splitting.
